Technological advances, resource efficiencies and competitive advantages are just a few of the reasons companies explore and implement virtual team structures. Virtual teams are comprised of geographically dispersed individuals who either work from home, within the same building, or as far away as a different country. There are many issues surrounding virtual teams that are worthy of research. The research can help to explain how the virtual teams work and also provide increased awareness of their dynamics. Specifically, the project management industry is the targeted industry, and this study examines valued leader qualities and preferred communication technologies that facilitate successful project completion. The methodology involved interviewing 19 project management professionals who either were working or had previously worked on a virtual project team. The results support the premise that virtual project teams require unique considerations related to leadership and communications that differ from traditional co-located work teams. As a result, this study was designed to provide valuable information that organizations can use to support decisions on choosing appropriate leaders and technology for the virtual project team.
