Leadership styles: Perceptions in Information Technology Project teams

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to uncover Information Technology (IT) Project Managers’ and IT Professionals’ perceptions of effective leadership styles as they apply to project success. There have been prior studies dealing with the differences in perceptions between IT Functional Manager’s leadership self-perception versus staff perceptions of their leadership abilities (Langlie, 2009); however, research relating specifically to functional management cannot be directly applied to project management because of the distinct differences between functional management and project management. (Hartman & Ashrafi, 2002; Meredith & Mantel, 2006) The research was needed to help understand the optimum leadership style for IT Project Managers to lead their projects to successful completion. The framework of the study was derived from the Avolio and Bass’ (2004) validated Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) 5X short form. The MLQ 5X is an assessment tool developed to examine leadership behaviors and their outcomes, and it was designed to capture a broad range of leadership behaviors through a continuum of leadership styles from Laissez-Faire to Transformational leadership. A total of 108 IT Project Managers were asked to provide their self-perceptions of their leadership style, and 108 IT Professionals were subsequently surveyed to provide their perceptions of their IT Project Manager’s leadership style and their desired IT Project Manager leadership style. The results suggest that IT Professionals desire a combination of Transactional and Transformational leadership styles to effectively lead projects to successful completion.
