Bridging the knowledge gap between the Baby Boomers and the multigenerations

by Rivers, Maggie, Ph.D., CAPELLA UNIVERSITY, 2012, 131 pages; 3547159

In 2008, researchers were determining that the federal government would lose over half of their workforce, because Baby Boomers were reaching their retirement age. With Baby Boomers leaving the workforce in such high numbers, the valuable knowledge that they have acquired through the years will leave with them. This research was conducted to determine which method of knowledge transfer Baby Boomers perceived as most effective. Data were collected by launching a survey via The multigenerations that participated in the study were Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials. This study determined that formal (explicit) knowledge was perceived as most effective in the transfer of knowledge from Baby Boomers to the multigenerations in the U.S. Department of the Army. The results showed that the generations retained tacit (implicit) knowledge more and that it was most effective when they were being trained by Baby Boomers. However, the generations utilized explicit knowledge the most and perceived that it was most effective.
