Financial losses, crisis communication strategies and donor financial support among nonprofit organizations affected by incidents of publicized fraud

Public relations and mass communications research indicates that a great deal of interest has been given corporate sector crisis communications. However crisis communications in the nonprofit sector has received little or no attention despite numerous crises of a similar magnitude to the crises in the corporate sector. This study drew on a sample of nonprofit organizations affected by financial fraud to examine if relationships existed between the financial losses due to financial fraud, crisis communication strategies and the proportion change in the financial support among donors. Moderated regression analysis was used to determine interaction effects of hypotheses derived from the image repair theory and the contingency theory of accommodation. The study found that relationships existed between financial losses, crisis response strategies and donor financial support, indicating the important implications for nonprofit crisis response strategies. These implications are noted in this study as well as recommendations for future research.
