Preservice teachers' attitudes toward content area literacy requirements in teacher preparation

Abstract:

The study focused on 22 preservice teachers who were required to enroll in a content area literacy course for K-12 licensure, and who challenged the efficacy of teaching content area literacy strategies in content areas. Bolman and Deal's Four Frames of Organizational Leadership (2008) were used to explore their attitudes. Mixed methods were employed. First, Vaughan's (1977) Scale to Measure Attitudes toward Teaching Reading in the Content Classroom was used to collect quantitative data. Next, reflective journals, concept mapping, and a questionnaire were used to collect qualitative data. Analyses revealed no significant differences between pre-test and post-survey measures of attitudes, but positive changes in participants' attitudes were shown in qualitative responses about content area literacy.
