Occupation 'from the river to the sea': Subaltern geopolitics of graduated incarceration in the 1967 Occupied Palestinian Territories
by Smith, Ron J., Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, 2011, 337 pages; 3501661

Abstract:

‘From the river to the sea’ is a study of the practices of incarceration mobilized by the Israeli state over the 1967 Occupied Palestinian Territories, or OPT. This study investigates the notion of occupation as an ‘open-air prison’ through subaltern geopolitics. Through interviews, media, and participant observation conducted on site over a period of five years in the West Bank and Gaza, I examine how Palestinians experience occupation as a process of incarceration for dispossession. I also consider the dramatic variations of occupation policy from place to place. These variations illustrate the dynamic and responsive nature of occupation in the overall process of expansion of the Israeli state at the expense of Palestinians.
