The educational and development benefits of utilizing alternative education methods in secondary schools

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to determine whether single sex education combined with the theory of Multiple Intelligences can increase the educational outcomes of high school aged African-American and Hispanic-American males. Currently, less than 50% of these two populations of students graduate from high school on time with their initial freshman class. With such a low matriculation rate, it is imperative that alternative instructional strategies are considered to increase the educational achievement of the African-American and Hispanic-American male. Without a high school diploma, these two demographics may not be absorbed into the job market and lead a meaningful life. Through the utilization of single sex education and the Theory of Multiple Intelligences it may be possible to re-energize these two demographic groups to have a zeal for knowledge at the high school level, which will in turn increase their graduation rates. It is vitally important to increase the graduation rate for these two demographic groups. With a high school diploma many doors will open that would otherwise be forever shut. For example, a person with a high school diploma may gain employment or decide to get additional training to learn a trade. With a diploma, it is possible to become a police officer, carpenter, electrician, HVAC technician, plumber, or a certified automotive mechanic. Without a diploma, these high quality professions are not attainable, which is why increasing the graduation rate of African-American and Hispanic-American males must be a priority. A highly educated workforce is a highly productive workforce.
