Case study: Impact of user participation in an information systems project

Abstract:

American systems development expenditures and maintenance costs have exceeded $225 billion domestically and over $450 billion worldwide, according to research. Despite this huge investment by firms, the literature on systems development is replete with project failures. The purpose of this research was to determine if user involvement in all system development stages within the banking industry led to user perception of successful project outcomes. This case study, conducted at a financial services firm, investigated the impact of user involvement in a human resources information system project. A flexible/qualitative design and mixed methodology were used in the study. The study contained the following research questions: 1) Should end users participate in all phases of system development to ensure successful project outcomes? 2) Is there a connection among position in the organization or level of computer expertise and perceived project success? 3) At what stage of the system development process did end users feel they had the most influence? 4) Did end users perceive the information system project as successful? There were several key study findings. Survey data revealed respondents participated in all phases of system development. There was no connection found between position in the company or level of computer expertise and perceived information system project success. Survey data highlighted that users felt they had the most project influence during the implementation stage. Survey results revealed that overall satisfaction/dissatisfaction evaluations of the new system ranged from slightly encouraged to very encouraged . Interviewee evaluations regarding satisfaction with the new system, on a scale of 1 to 10, ranged from 7 to 10; 60% of the ratings were 9 and higher.
