Faculty attitude, knowledge, and comfort towards students with disabilities: A community college setting

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate faculty attitude towards students with disabilities, their comfort with providing accommodations, and their knowledge regarding laws that govern services to students with disabilities in higher education. Ninety-three faculty from a community college completed an online survey designed to investigate these three variables. Faculty was identified as academic faculty, technical faculty, fulltime faculty, or technical faculty. The Scale of Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons - Form R (SADP - Form R) (Antonak & Livneh, 1988) was used to measure attitude towards students with disabilities. The Accommodation Survey created by Satcher (1992) was used to measure comfort level with for providing accommodations and the Faculty Knowledge of Disability Laws Survey (Thompson, Bethea, & Turner, 1997) was used in order to assess the knowledge faculty have regarding disability laws that govern students attending higher education institutions. Results indicated all four faculty groups demonstrated a positive attitude towards students with disabilities. Data also suggested all four faculty groups were comfortable with providing accommodations and all four faculty groups were unknowledgeable of the laws pertaining to students with disabilities in higher education.
