A mixed methods case study on the perceived influence of principals on school-wide interactive whiteboard integration

Abstract:

This study focused on the teachers' perceived influence of the principal on their use of the interactive whiteboard (IWB). In this research study, the researcher employed several methods of data collection. These methods included a survey, questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and focus group. Teachers in Sunshine School District completed the IWB Survey Instrument and participated in a focus group. The researcher also conducted a semi-structured interview with Sunshine School District's Coordinator of Educational Technology. The survey and questionnaire were administered in phase one and the interview and focus group protocols were used in phase two. The researcher ensured ethical procedures were followed and permission was granted before research began. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher conducted constant comparative and emerging theme analyses. Reliability and validity of the survey instrument limited threats to the research data. Reflexivity and member checks ensured that the qualitative data was objective and valid. Data triangulation was completed at the conclusion of all other data analyses. It was determined by the researcher that other factors contributed to teachers' use of IWBs, other than principal influence. In schools with higher use of IWBs it was reported that the principal encouraged IWB use through model lessons, professional development, observations, teacher accountability, and through being a model of technology use themselves. A factor identified by teachers to influence technology use was their knowledge of its use. Professional development was also identified as an important factor in technology use that requires further investigation by researchers.
