Collaborative Classrooms in Public Education

Abstract:

The implementation of laws such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), IDEA, and PL 94-142 have set requirements for every student to be successful in learning. In response to legislation, general education and special education students are taught together in classrooms to meet the diverse needs of each student. Differentiated methods of instruction must be used in the classroom to ensure that all student needs are cared for. This qualitative research is designed to compare and contrast the perceptions of special education and general education students, their parents, and their teachers of the inclusive classroom and collaborative process. Focus groups were used to collect information and evaluate the perceptions of collaboration and its effectiveness in inclusive classrooms.
