Exploring the lived sexual experiences and condom use consistency of heterosexual African American men at risk for HIV infection
by White, Shawn L., Ph.D., CAPELLA UNIVERSITY, 2011, 94 pages; 3475198

Abstract:

The intent of this qualitative research study was to begin to bridge the gap in literature and contribute to existing information on condom use consistency, types of relationships with women and risks for human immunodeficiency virus and sexually transmitted diseases among heterosexual African American men. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived sexual experiences of a selected sample of (N=10) African American heterosexual men who have sex with women and learn some of the contributing factors and at risk behaviors that place them at risk for HIV and other STDs. Semi-structured interviews with African American men provided rich data by addressing research questions through the lens of those experiencing the topic under investigation. Findings from this study revealed the need to identify and develop interventions for heterosexual men to increase communication and negotiation of condoms with main and casual sex partners. The findings additionally produced awareness of the HIV risks, as well as the behaviors that contribute to potential infection among this population of African American men.
