Teacher autonomy in light of managed instruction

Abstract:

This study evaluated the impact that the implementation of the Managed Instruction with Earned Empowerment policy has had on teacher autonomy. The study focuses primarily upon the results of an Organizational Health Instrument (OHI) survey. The survey was conducted yearly in the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) from 2005- 2010. This research presents the background of the standards movement and the impact it's had on teacher autonomy. The study explored the results of an OHI survey to determine whether the implementation of the MIEE policy impacted teacher autonomy. The research also examined the relationship between teacher autonomy and a school's state accountability rating. Based on an analysis of the OHI data the research found that the implementation of the MIEE policy significantly impacted teacher autonomy. The study found that teacher autonomy did not correlate with a school's rating. The study concludes by outlining the implications of the results and offering reflections from key stakeholders in the Dallas ISD.
