Ethereal Cowboy Way: An Ethnographic Study of Cowboy Churches Today
by Williford, John W., Jr., Ph.D., REGENT UNIVERSITY, 2011, 208 pages; 3472676

Abstract:

One trend within the Christian community is a growing number of cowboy churches in the United States and elsewhere. This ethnographic study examined three cowboy church cultures in the southeastern part of the United States. The purpose was to determine what characterized these religious cultures, what benefits members perceived they derived from them, how they differed from more traditional churches, and what role media played in the development and maintenance of these cultures. It was found that those historical narratives of the American cowboy, media's depictions of cowboy heroes and values, and basic Christian doctrine and practices interacted to produce what appears to be unique and growing cowboy faith culture in America.
