Design, Synthesis and Powder Diffraction Crystallography of Porous Framework Materials

Abstract:

This dissertation encompasses the development of new synthetic approaches to the preparation of framework materials. The design, synthesis and characterization of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) from the assembly of molecular building blocks by strong bonds, and the study of their crystal structures by means of powder diffraction crystallography are discussed in detail. A crystalline porous three-dimensional covalent organic framework, termed COF-300, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Tetrahedral tetra-(4-anilyl)-methane and linear terephthaldehyde building blocks were condensed to form C=N imine linkages in a material whose X-ray crystal structure shows 5 independent diamond frameworks.
