Regulatory Focus, Opportunity Recognition and Crativity: An Experimental Investigation

Abstract:

This dissertation looks at the opportunity recognition process through a creativity lens in an attempt to answer one of the central questions of the entrepreneurship domain: why, when and how some people and not others discover and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities? Employing regulatory focus theory, the research posits that individuals motivated by a promotion focus will have a preference for novelty and opportunities with a high probability of large gains, while individuals motivated by a prevention focus will have a preference for value and opportunities with a high probability of small losses. Hypotheses were tested in a quantitative experimental methodology, where individuals where manipulated into a promotion or prevention focus and put through a battery of creative generation and evaluation exercises. Findings are limited and on occasions contradict the research hypotheses.
