A study of the relationship between lawyer rating of job satisfaction and the mentorship behavior of their mentor/lead adviser

Abstract:

This investigation examined the relationship between lawyer job satisfaction and the rating of their mentor/lead adviser mentorship style. A total of one hundred fifty four lawyers admitted to the Texas Bar since 1994 participated in this study. All participants were administered the Abridged Job Descriptive Index (AJDI) to assess lawyer facet levels of job satisfaction; the Abridged Job in General (AJIG) scale to assess lawyer levels of overall job in general satisfaction; the Mentoring Functions Questionnaire (MFQ-9) to assess lawyer rating of mentor/lead adviser mentorship style; a demographics background questionnaire to obtain lawyer demographics data; and a mentor/lead adviser demographics questionnaire to obtain mentor/lead adviser demographics data. This study ran multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships between all the independent variables and dependent variables. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine gender and ethnicity differences between the lawyers and their mentor/lead advisers. The results of this study indicated that salary range, having a mentor/lead adviser at the same firm, career-related support, and role modeling were statistically significant to job satisfaction. Years of experience as a lawyer and having a mentor/lead adviser at the same firm were statistically significant to lawyer satisfaction with people at work. Having a mentor/lead adviser at the same firm was an additional predictor to satisfaction with people at work. Having a mentor/lead adviser at the same firm increased participant satisfaction with people at work than those participants whose mentor/lead adviser was not at the same firm. A discussion of implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research is provided.
