Building Caregiver-Child Interactions and Joint Attention Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Training Workshop on DRIP

Abstract:

The current study explores the effectiveness of a training workshop on the DRIP technique (Describe, Reflect, Imitate and Praise) with caregivers of male children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. There were 8 participants who attended the training, including 3 mothers, a father, an aunt, a grandmother, a teacher and a speech and language pathologist. There were 5 males being represented by the participants, ranging in ages 5 to 12 years old and varying in level of functioning, ranging from high to moderate and low. The training consisted of a one-time 2-hour workshop in which participants completed a demographic questionnaire, a pre and post measure, as well as a satisfaction questionnaire. The post measure quiz results showed that all but one of the participants demonstrated above adequate (65% or higher) knowledge of the DRIP technique after completion of the workshop. However, regarding participants ability to apply the DRIP technique to a difficult play scenario specific to their child, only half of the participants demonstrated above adequate (65% or higher) scores. This discrepancy in knowledge versus application scores suggest that the workshop was effective in teaching the DRIP technique to the participants, however without either further modification of DRIP for ASD children or more extensive training and hands on experience, the workshop was not fully effective in teaching the participants how to apply it to their ASD child, the results also suggest that the DRIP technique did not seem to vary in difficulty of application regarding the child's level of functioning, which would mean it could be used with a range of children on the spectrum, not just isolated to higher or lower functioning. Other factors examined included, level of satisfaction of the workshop, question format of the post measure quiz, and level of difficulty in gaining knowledge and applying each specific DRIP component.
