A qualitative study on the retention and graduation rates of African American students at a community college

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to compare the retention and graduation rates of African American students who participate and those who do not participate in Student Support Services at a community college. This research study was guided by the following primary question: Is there a comparison between retention and graduation rates of African American students who participate and those who do not participate in Student Support Services at Community College A? A qualitative design was used for this study with 28 Student Support Services participants and 28 non-Student Support Services participants at Community College A. Standardized open-ended questions were used to collect data from each group. Findings from the study revealed that all African American students who participated in Student Support Services did well at the college by graduating or transferring to a 4-year institution compared to African American students who did not participate in Student Support Services at the college.
