An investigation of the relationship between the perception of managerial leadership behavior and job satisfaction of substance abuse counselors

Abstract:

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between perceived leadership behavior and job satisfaction of substance abuse counselors (SACs). The population sample consisted of SACs from selected not-for-profit substance treatment organizations. The research study sought to determine if a relationship exists between perceived leadership behavior and job satisfaction. A questionnaire was used to collect data on both perceived leadership behavior and on each SAC's satisfaction with supervision and job in general. The demographic section of the questionnaire provided data that identified the study participants' gender, level of education, years of service, and position/job title in their organizations. The results indicated that there was a relationship between perceived leadership behavior and employee job satisfaction. Consideration dimension of leadership behavior was found to have a positive and stronger relationship with job satisfaction when compared to initiating structure leadership behavior. Gender, level of education, and years of service were found to be non-significant predictors of employee job satisfaction. It is hoped that findings from this study will provide an enhanced understanding of the nature of the relationship between perception of leadership behavior and employee job satisfaction. Overall, the findings from this study will help substance abuse treatment organizations to adequately prepare leaders in the substance abuse treatment field with effective skills and knowledge that enable them to create and foster a work environment that enhances employee satisfaction.
