The impact of a curricular professional learning community on student achievement on Tennessee's end of course examination in United States history

Abstract:

In today's educational world an effective school is often determined by student achievement, which is judged by student performance on a high-stakes exam. In Tennessee, the elementary and middle school students' are tested through the TCAP program, while high school students are evaluated through end-of-course exams and writing assessments.

A big question facing many schools today is which of the many suggested initiatives works best in raising overall student achievement on high stakes exam. One such initiative is professional learning communities. This study examines a curricular professional learning community consisting of social studies teachers.
