A study of the effectiveness of an individual achievement plan on student academic success

Abstract:

This study investigated the effectiveness of an individual achievement plan for first graders in reading, fourth graders in math, and sixth graders in both reading and math in a mid-sized urban school district in Tennessee. Students from below, average, and high level learning groups were studied to determine if students who had an individual achievement plan had greater academic achievement than students without an individual achievement plan. The researcher worked with administrators and teachers from three elementary schools to identify student learning needs, prescribe instructional opportunities, and evaluate the outcomes. The results of implementing an individual achievement plan were mixed; however students achieved more when instruction was targeted to individual needs and the teacher was skilled in accomplishing individualization.
