Postsecondary aspirations of rural high school seniors
by Britton, Penelope L., Ph.D., CAPELLA UNIVERSITY, 2011, 79 pages; 3460041

Abstract:

Research has established that the achievement of postsecondary education positively impacts socioeconomic status, personal growth, and self-esteem. Postsecondary education offers young people in rural communities an avenue to more opportunities, higher socioeconomic status, and personal growth, but fewer rural students are going to college and/or universities. In order to develop appropriate interventions to encourage participation in postsecondary education, public school systems and institutions of higher education need a better understanding of the influences and attitudes affecting rural students' decisions about their aspirations for the future. This qualitative case study investigated factors that influence the postsecondary aspirations of a rural high school's senior class of approximately 51 students. The data, collected through questionnaires and interviews, indicated a variety of factors influencing postsecondary aspirations. Although the study had limitations, two significant findings were the degree of importance that significant adults played in students' decisions and postsecondary aspirations, and the need to provide career and education information prior to high school.
