A Leadership Journey Toward Implementation of Career and Technical High School Professional Learning Communities

Abstract:

As principals explore various professional development approaches, they must be aware that many initiatives often fail due to ineffective implementation. This paper focuses on a change process that gradually changed a school culture that believes that all students can learn, ensures sustained job embedded professional development with adequate time for teachers to answer critical questions on student learning, and develops results oriented goals related to student achievement. The following are recommendations for implementing key concepts in Professional Learning Communities at Sussex Technical High School: (1) All administrators and teachers in the Sussex Technical School District continue to focus on student learning and ask: What essential outcomes do we want for students? How will we know if students have them? How will we address and support students who have not mastered the essential outcomes? and (2) Implement strategic, measurable, attainable, result-based, time bound (SMART) goals using student data to reinforce student growth.
