The lived experience of cultural competency and diversity training among healthcare professionals

Abstract:

This generic qualitative study was designed and conducted to hear eight healthcare professionals describe their experiences of diversity and cultural competence in a hospital workplace setting. Research has shown that healthcare professionals and providers continue to fail in understanding how to work with others who are different from themselves and respond to patients’ varied perspectives, values, beliefs, and behaviors about health and well-being. It is important to identify those experiences that are common and unique to healthcare professionals. A description of the experiences of healthcare professionals provided insight and understanding with regard to working with diverse populations and some training needed that may eliminate some barriers that prevent other healthcare professionals from working with and responding to individual differences. Also research has shown that learning how to respond to the needs and demands of a diverse population is an integral part of an organization’s success. In addition, this knowledge is presented in the healthcare professionals’ voices in an effort to speak to other healthcare professionals and hear their accounts of subjective experiences and opinions from the perspective of those who has lived the experience. Data from the participants in this study were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews, confirming many conclusions from prior research concerning cultural competence outcomes of healthcare professionals working with individuals who are from diverse cultural backgrounds. This study’s findings reflect those of current literature, and discusses eight themes that conclude that healthcare professionals would benefit from diversity initiative strategies that ensure rapid professional development as a priority for working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds in the workplace, and providing patients with appropriate and quality healthcare.
