Defining Gifted: An Autoethnographic Study of Giftedness

Abstract:

Delving into the field of gifted education from an autoethnographic perspective is the premise of this research. Through introspection coupled with study of themes, personal stories are interwoven with current research. Though aspects of giftedness pervade many areas of an individual's life, the relationship to and effects on education is the focus of this research. Specifically, the struggles and discrepancies within and surrounding the field of gifted education are explored. Definition, policy and practice are examined revealing challenges associated with consistency. Relating the researcher's own experience within each area, the personal quest to find balance is symbolic of the yin and yang that exists in gifted education. Research outcomes involved becoming a more authentic leader, gaining an empowerment and comfort within the label of gifted, and adding to the body of research related to giftedness.
