Spiritual Assessment of Students at Conservative Wesleyan-Arminian Bible Colleges

Abstract:

The current study proposed to determine the level of spiritual transformation in students at conservative Wesleyan-Arminian Bible colleges and the association of spiritual transformation with selected Bible college activities. A quantitative survey was designed, validated, and implemented to measure students’ self-reported levels of spiritual transformation and their perceptions of how selected Bible college activities influenced their spiritual growth. This survey, designed in cooperation with the leaders of the colleges in order to be congruent with the theological perspectives and the specific objectives of those colleges, was administered in five of the nine conservative Wesleyan-Arminian Bible colleges to 432 students. Students reported high levels of spiritual transformation (a mean of 5.56 on the six-point Likert-type scale), they testified that they were practicing the basic spiritual disciplines, and they indicated that the Bible college experience is contributing to their spiritual transformation. The results suggest that the conservative Wesleyan-Arminian Bible colleges are achieving their purpose to encourage spiritual transformation and should continue their current strategies. Continued use and development of the survey by the Bible colleges could provide institution-specific data to compare with the benchmarks established in this study.
