Leadership development and the retention and promotion of racial and ethnic minority nurses

Abstract:

The supply of appropriately prepared health care workers in the United States is inadequate to meet the needs of a growing and diverse population. Racial and ethical disparities in health care utilization are recognized problems. The diverse population of the United States must be reflected in its nursing workforce. Baseline data on the experiences of licensed and registered nurses who self-identify as members of racial and ethnic minority groups is outlined in this study. The perceptions and experiences of racial and ethnic minority nurses, with possible solutions to decreasing disparities, are discussed, along with specific action plans and a final recommendation for all consumers and providers of health care involved.
