Electronic social networking services and their effects on multidimensional self-esteem

Abstract:

Electronic social networking service (SNS) is a rapidly growing phenomenon that many people over the world are using to communicate. Currently there have been reported 850 different SNSs in operation as of 2008. Due to the growing occurrence of SNS to aid in communication with others, this could have a significant effect on multidimensional self-esteem. This study hypothesized that SNS has a significant effect on multidimensional self-esteem (MSE).

A survey was sent out via e-mail to invite individuals to take the survey that included the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory (MSEI). One hundred and twenty-three individuals participated in the survey, mostly Caucasian and male. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was run to see if there was any clinical significance of the effects of SNS (IV) on MSE (DV) using a statistic program called SPSS. There was no statistically significant effect found of the IV on the DV. What was found is individuals who reported using SNS reported a low score on the Moral Self-Approval subscale of the MSEI, which supports the argument that the lack of social context cues can lead people to be uninhibited and aggressive, fostering deceit, abuse, and sometimes harassment.
