Professional development for generalist teachers to meet the demands of 21st century instruction: A qualitative study of high school alternative education

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how professional development activities were carried out in order to help alternative high school education teachers meet the changing student demographics and the global economy. This study also investigated how the abovementioned teachers addressed their professional needs and how they measured their personal and professional growth. Such an understanding explained how generalist teachers created and maintained a culture of learning as well as how they implemented 21st century instruction. An exploration of a 21st-century professional development model added value to the study because it is learner-centered and thus accommodates the individual needs of adult learners and their students, particularly those in alternative education settings.
