Using a summer extended year program to increase learning for Title I students

Abstract:

The Summer Enrichment Camp (SEC) at Pequea Valley School District was developed to provide an extended school year for at-risk, Title I, students. This study compared the learning growth of the SEC students with similar students who did not attend SEC. The 36 students in the SEC group were compared to 18 non-SEC students using district and state test scores in the areas of reading and math. All of the students were in the third and fourth grades.

Other sources of information for this study were two surveys, journal articles and research studies. One survey was conducted at the end of camp and it asked how well the students liked their experience. The second survey was given to SEC students two months after they attended SEC. This survey asked whether students felt that SEC helped them to become better students.

The data analysis showed similar gains on district and state test scores between the two groups of students. However, the survey results provided strong support for continuing the SEC on other grounds. With improvements such as more parent involvement and better participation the SEC program may continue to provide advantages beyond what is measured by test scores.
