Exemplary leadership practices---exploring culture preferences

Abstract:

The U.S. Census identifies Hispanics as the fastest growing minority, which indisputably changes the composition of the workforce. This workforce change will more than likely affect the relationship dynamics between a leader and followers. Although numerous leadership practices exist, this study examined the influence that cultural preferences has on Kouzes and Posner's (2002) exemplary leadership practices, specifically differences between Hispanics and Non-Hispanics. Kouzes and Posner's (2002) LPI-Observer and Hofstede's (2008) VSM-08 were used to determine use of leadership practices and cultural preferences, respectively. One hundred and nineteen students attending a private Texas university participated in this study by completing the LPI-Observer and the VSM08. Although the results from this research did not reveal differences in challenge the process, inspire a shared vision, model the way, and encourage the heart, it did reveal that differences in enable others to act does exist between Hispanics and Non-Hispanics. Additionally, this study revealed differences in power distance, masculinity versus femininity, and long-term versus short-term orientation as a result of gender, age, and education.
