Gifted and bipolar: A phenomenological analysis of living with labels

Abstract:

This study explored the lived experience of individuals who had previously been identified as gifted and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Participants in the study were current undergraduate and graduate students who had formally been identified as gifted and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This study utilized a phenomenological methodology, which employed open-ended, qualitative interviews that were recorded, transcribed and ultimately analyzed using an empirical phenomenological methodology. The result of this analysis process yielded situated structural descriptions for each participant and a general structure description of the experience of being in the world as an individual who has been identified as gifted and diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
