Review of financial performance and efficiency in resources utilization of hospitals: Lessons learned from U.S. hospitals
by Lee, Hae Ho, Dr.P.H., UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 2010, 87 pages; 3413223

Abstract:

This study was analyzed with the financial performance and resources utilization among three types of American hospitals such as independent, network membership, and system membership hospitals. Also, it was done with the influencing factors on financial performance and resources utilizing efficiency in network membership hospitals. This study was used for the data from the 2007 AHA annual survey, Medicare claims report, and CMS data. It was done for the acute general hospitals in 100 largest cities in the United States. Comparing means between each type of hospitals and not, only pure network members showed a significant positive difference in cash flow, and pure system members revealed a significant positive difference in revenue and expenses. However, after controlling the control factors to perform regression analysis, it had a significantly positive relationship with cash flow in only independent hospitals. The profitability of network members had a significantly positive relationship with occupancy rate after controlling the control factors. And it showed positive efficiency with length of stay even though it was not statistically significant.
