The dynamics of joy in work

Abstract:

Joy in relationship with work is perceived neither as a positive nor a negative emotion by individuals. Joy is simply a state of being. This qualitative study examined the relationship of joy and work, how joy was experienced what impact it had, and was it even desirable?

A global corporation, an educational institute, and the fine arts field were the settings used for data collection. Grounded theory methodology was utilized which revealed that certain attributes in work do enhance the experience of joy for employees, yet for the most part they go about business as usual, without paying significant attention to joy, or raising expectations for joy. For those individuals for whom joy is their state of being, that shows up in the work environment and makes a significant impact.

Joy is much more easily experienced and adds to individual fulfillment when work is or becomes a calling; when there is a significant challenge to overcome or resolve, and also when an individual feels complete involvement and timelessness in work.
