The relationship between the presence of ethnic minority faculty and growth of student cultural competency

Abstract:

Assessing the cultural competency of students can assist college and university leaders determine if the presence of ethnic faculty affects the level of student’s cultural competency. In this study, a mixed-methodology approach using the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (Kelly and Meyers, 2003) and an interview was used to assess the level of growth in cultural competency of community college students at a Colorado community college. The survey was distributed at the beginning and end of the survey and the interview was conducted with students that completed both surveys. Analysis of the data produced by the two surveys and the interview indicated that the presence of ethnic faculty did not have a measurable impact on the growth in cultural competency of the students. Further research should be conducted using different methods to determine if student cultural competency is affected by the ethnicity of classroom faculty.
