Preaching to Catholic college students: Issues and strategies in developing a homiletic for Roman Catholic preachers in the United States

Abstract:

This thesis project is a presentation of a proposed methodology which is designed to assist preachers to preach effectively to young adults in the U.S. The first chapter states the need for such a methodology based on the Church's quest since the Second Vatican Council to improve the quality of preaching. The second chapter presents the theology of the methodology which explores the role that human emotions play in the interpretation of Scripture and on the delivery of a homily. Chapters three and four present a developmental psychology and a sociological profile of the young adult population in the U.S. They also explore the implications that these profiles have on preaching preparation and delivery. Chapter five presents the quantitative and qualitative data that was collected from an online preaching survey and from focus groups. The survey and focus groups, which were conducted at four institutions of higher education that were founded by and are maintained by the Congregation of Holy Cross, seek to give a voice from the pews of young adults by asking them to state what they hear in preaching. Participants were also asked to state what they would like to hear in preaching. Chapter six discusses the implications of these findings on preaching. The final chapter presents seven homilies that demonstrate the proposed methodology of preaching that is presented in this thesis. Each homily includes a commentary feedback from the congregation to demonstrate the effectiveness of this methodology. It is my sincere hope that the data collected by the survey and by the focus groups, as well as the methodology presented in this thesis, will assist preachers to preach an effective word to the young adult congregation.
