Self esteem and academic success for urban, migrant, and high socioeconomic students

Abstract:

This study was a qualitative interview study on the effects of self-esteem on academic success. The study interviewed 9 students, 3 from a high socioeconomic sample of students, 3 from a group of migrant students and 3 from a group of urban, at-risk students. The interviews examined 6 areas of interest with regard to self-esteem: Scholastic competence, social acceptance, peer group, athletic competence, physical appearance, and behavioral conduct. The researcher intended to see what areas of interest had a greater effect on the students’ academic success.
