The daughter's experience of her mother's having breast cancer: A phenomenological study
by Clem, Joyce A., Ph.D., CAPELLA UNIVERSITY, 2009, 118 pages; 3387332

Abstract:

Over the past 30 years, a significant amount of research in psychology has been dedicated to the effects of cancer. Most of this research has examined the impact of cancer on the patient and the patient's family. Although all family members experience the impact of chronic illness, children whose parents are chronically ill are at particular risk for psychosocial maladjustment. Adolescent girls seem to be most affected because they are faced with increased responsibilities and a sense of vulnerability that boys do not often face. One of the problems with previous studies is that they have relied on parents to describe their children's experiences. This qualitative study explored the daughter's experience of her mother's having breast cancer from the daughter's perspective. Moustakas' transcendental phenomenological model was used to explore the thoughts, feelings and experiences of a small number of daughters who were willing to share their stories. In-depth interviews were conducted and themes were extracted from the data in hopes of identifying commonalities between the participants. Implications for psychologists, counselors and health professionals were discussed.
