Exploring cultural norms and behaviors that define an ethical environment in charitable nonprofit organizations

Abstract:

Researching ethical culture in charitable nonprofit organizations has been difficult because there is not adequate information about what cultural norms and behaviors define an ethical environment. Most of the research appears to have an individual focus. While the individual focus is valuable in understanding ethical behavior, it does not tell the story from the organizational point of view. Through in-depth interviews with twenty-six organizational leaders in charitable nonprofit organizations, using a grounded theory qualitative design, this research provides a series of propositions that can be used to help individuals understand an ethical environment and their role in promoting ethics in charitable nonprofit organizations. As a result of this study, an Integrated Model of Cultural Norms and Behaviors That Define an Ethical Environment was developed. The research provides a systematic approach to guide leaders in developing strategies to create an ethical culture for developing future leaders and competitive advantage.
