Gravity as the Source of Lightness: A set of seven compositions

Abstract:

Gravity as the Source of Lightness, titled after the last of seven compositions, is a selection from a body of work written over the span of seven years. The pieces extend through a variety of genres, and trace the composers concern with the multidimensional aspects of structure, timbre, rhythm and the development of a harmonic language. The harmonic context in these pieces deals predominantly with equal tempered quartertone tuning. The first piece, Verdichtungen, is written for medium sized chamber orchestra. It is the only piece where microtones only appear in a quasi incidental manner, embellishing solo lines, and as part of multiphonics. Triplex Unity, a duo for soprano saxophone and percussion, developed this notion by extracting its harmonies from the multiphonic material of the saxophone. Redshift, an electronic work for four-channel tape is detached from the constrains of quartertone tuning. Harmonic relationships are constructed in freely tuned intervals. Source materials stem entirely from a piano. Rising from the Mist, for string quartet, works with clearer trajectories, and a sectionalized form. Placed in a context of quartertone harmonies the questioning of music as concrete fabric provides the narrative framework. Lichtrisse, for quintet, unites virtuosic gestural notion, with timbrally derived harmonies and rhythmic complexity. Cendre, for bass flute and live electronics, extends the explored parameters of the flute into the electronic realm. It furthermore incorporates space as an important parameter. Gravity as the Source of Lightness, for full orchestra, reconciles the developed harmonic principles with the pragmatic world of orchestra writing.
