A new family of screw-motion invariant minimal surfaces
by Hackman, Michelle, Ph.D., INDIANA UNIVERSITY, 2009, 73 pages; 3378352

Abstract:

We study complete, properly immersed singly periodic minimal surfaces in [special characters omitted] that have genus one in the quotient and catenoid ends. A well-known example in this class is the fence of catenoids, which is translation invariant and has two ends in the quotient. While it is impossible to have translation invariant examples with fewer ends in the quotient, we find screw-motion invariant minimal surfaces with just one end, called one-noids. We use geometric clues to determine candidates for the Weierstrass data of our surfaces. We then adjust the parameters in these data using symmetry and intermediate value arguments to ensure that the surfaces are well-defined and satisfy all desired properties.

About ProQuest Dissertations & Theses
With over 2.3 million records, the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (PQDT) database is the most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses in the world. It is the database of record for graduate research.

The database includes citations of graduate works ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Of the 2.3 million graduate works included in the database, ProQuest offers more than 1.9 million in full text formats. Of those, over 860,000 are available in PDF format. More than 60,000 dissertations and theses are added to the database each year.
