Abstract:

This Doctor of Ministry project addresses the question: How can an effective character formation program that will produce Christ-like character in the leaders of Covenant Life Ministries be designed and implemented? In this project, the leadership team of Covenant Life Ministries was the primary focal group being studied. Our church believes that its leaders ought to model the character of Christ expressed in Galatians 5:22-23 and throughout the gospels. Therefore, it is our desire to produce leaders with the ability to begin and end their respective ministries with integrity and without incidences due to character deficiencies. We believe that Christian leaders can and should operate at the highest levels of character, integrity, and honesty as representatives of Jesus Christ.

The goal for designing this program has been to chart the growth and development of the focal group over a nine-week period. This was accomplished by the use of a character assessment questionnaire and the study of character formation in the lives of God's people. The researcher has cataloged all findings and assessed the growth and development of the focal group with field notes and surveys. Finally, the character formation program was called the "Values Transformation Workshop" and lasted for nine weeks, educating the students on every component of the Values Transformation Diamond, which is necessary for both internal and external change. The following observations were made. First, there was an increase in the Christian Character Index (CCI) mean score between the pre- and post-tests of the participants. Second, there was an increase in the CCI mean score between men and women. And finally, there was a difference in the CCI mean score between the participants of the "Personal Mentoring Session" and the "Non-Personal Mentoring Session" participants.
