An assessment of middle and high school content-area teachers' knowledge of adolescent literacy

Abstract:

Recent assessment trends as well as the efforts of adolescent literacy researchers illustrate the need for and importance of instruction that meets the needs of today's adolescents. While the literacy community has learned a great deal about adolescent literacy, the teachers of adolescents may not have the support they need to successfully create and implement instruction that aligns with these needs. In an attempt to create a tool to help support teachers' professional development, this study endeavored to develop an assessment that measures middle and high school content-area teachers' knowledge of adolescent literacy. In addition, the study tested the content validity, reliability, and construct validity of the assessment. While the study established content validity and the reliability of the assessment, it did not establish construct validity.
