Adequate Yearly Progress versus the School Keys: A comparative case study

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to compare AYP to the School Keys to determine the adequacy of both criteria as effective measurements for school success. The study used existing data from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) survey, and the Georgia Assessment of Performance on School Standards (GAPSS) analysis to examine leadership, teacher instruction, and student performance. The results for this study indicated that the School Keys yielded a statistical significance over AYP as an adequate assessment of school performance z = 17.31, p < .01. In addition, the results also show that a school can make AYP, but perform on an emergent level according to the GAPSS analysis. Therefore, this study presented the School Keys as an alternative or supplementary assessment to NCLB's criteria for measuring school success.
