Servant leadership is one of the most talked about yet least critically examined leadership philosophies. The purpose of this study was to develop a well-defined framework of a servant leader by identifying the key traits/characteristics and attitudes exhibited by these types of leaders and the work environments in which they are effective. The study was qualitatively and quantitatively driven, employing the Delphi method, which produced a consensus among panel members, with respect to servant leadership. The 7 participants of the study represented business leaders, authors of leadership, leaders in federal government, educators, theologians/clergy and leaders of non-profit associations geographically dispersed throughout the United States with the participants serving as subject matter experts from various disciplines. The research method encompassed a three round Delphi. The results identified the traits/characteristics, attitudes and effective work environments of servant leaders and imply that they value people and make service a priority. The emphasis on service and positive relationships with people are concepts realized in the outcome of this study. As indicated from this study's results, ideas with respect to leadership represent a work in progress rather than a finished model.
