Abstract:

Self-esteem is the one phenomenon that affects every single decision a girl makes in and throughout her life. School administrators nationwide are faced with the self-esteem gap of fourth-grade girls in urban schools and suburban schools. This trend strands girls on the wrong side of the education divide thus leaving girls behind. The purpose of this research study was to determine to what extent the relationship exists between school setting and self-esteem in fourth-grade female students as measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. A quantitative research design was applied utilizing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale survey measured the relationship of fourth-grade girls’ self-esteem in urban schools and suburban schools. The survey also measured the difference in self-esteem scale score of fourth grade girls by region. The sample for the study consisted of 69 urban fourth-grade girls and 69 suburban fourth-grade girls from one school district. Student data was collected utilizing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Correlation analysis and descriptive statistics were applied to analyze the data. Overall, the results of this study were consistent findings that region (urban school vs. suburban school) does make a significant difference in fourth-grade girls self-esteem. There was a significant difference on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale for fourth grade girls. Suburban girls scored higher and had significantly less variance. Scale scores for the suburban group yielded a range of 30-35 out of a possible score of 40. This is consistently high where as the urban group scale scores were much lower. The scale score for the urban group yielded a lower range which was consistent with low self-esteem although a few girls had high self-esteem in the urban group. The urban group scores yielded a higher variance. The study revealed region does predict the score of fourth-grade girls on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.
