A comparison of the alternate assessment process in special education in eight states

Abstract:

The alternate assessment process will affect every student with a disability. The alternate assessment is a product of the educational changes brought about by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Under NCLB, students with severe disabilities are being assessed on levels that might be beyond their capabilities. Students are assessed on alternate grade-level indicators based upon their chronological age. The manner in which the indicators for Grades 3 and 5 and high school mathematics are written vary from state to state. This study is a comparison of alternate performance indicators that are used in the alternate assessment of students with severe disabilities. Since each state is responsible for the formation of its own assessment, this study compared the alternate performance indicators of eight states. The comparison will serve as an insight into how students with severe disabilities are assessed, and educated.
