The validation of a Strategic Tutoring Program to address adolescent literacy: Improving educational outcomes for students identified as being at risk for academic failure

Abstract:

This project tested the effectiveness of the Strategic Tutoring Program (Hock, Deshler, & Schumaker, 2000) in increasing the reading achievement levels of at-risk middle school readers. Participants included 84 sixth- through eighth-grade students identified as being at risk for academic failure, assigned to either an experimental or a comparison group. Students in the experimental group learned the PREP Strategy (Hock et Al., 2000), a research-based reading strategy that is a key component of the Strategic Tutoring Program. Students in the comparison group received traditional homework assistance. Results showed that students in the experimental group improved vocabulary and comprehension scores as measured by a standardized reading measure and improved grades in academic courses for which tutoring was provided.
