The impact of a theatre arts intervention on underachieving gifted Latinos

Abstract:

A theatre-arts intervention was designed and applied to underachieving gifted Latinos in middle school to increase engagement in school and academic success. Two participating teachers administered the 10-week afterschool program to a group of 18 participants. The action research project changed based upon the feedback of the teachers and participants. The academic grades, work habits, and cooperation marks of the participants were compared to a control group of 16 students who shared similar demographic characteristics. While no significant academic changes occurred, qualitative data and limited quantitative data suggest that students who participated in the program increased some aspects of their school engagement.
